Dmitri Patches Up Half the Wasteland

*Day 255. The System presents the day in the life of a man who cannot walk past anyone.*

The storm had moved off in the night, but it had left its handwriting everywhere: roof sheeting folded like paper, a power pole leaning on a house, and on the hill above the reservoir, a woman lying flat on top of a tarp.

Dmitri ran the last stretch.

"Are you hurt?"

Ida did not look up. She was lying across her recording gear, spread-eagled, holding it down against the gusts with her whole body. "If you're going to help," she said through her teeth, "take the corner."

He took the corner. Together they pinned the tarp, weighted it with stones, and dragged the whole bundle into the lee of a wall. Only then did Ida sit up, hair full of grit, and check the reels one by one.

"Are they all right?"

"They're all right." She looked at him properly for the first time. This was their seventh meeting, and the first time he had seen her smile. "Most folks would have asked if *I* was all right."

"I did ask that."

"You did," she admitted. "Then you took the corner."

She did not thank him. She did not need to. Dmitri left her with her thunderstorms and walked down the hill feeling ten pounds lighter.

---

He found Avni twice that day, once by the market fence and once by the well. Avni used to be a stenographer, and now she collects murder ballads, which the System considers a natural career path. At the well, her hands were shaking as she worked the rope. Dmitri noticed. He did not mention it. He just took the other side of the rope and pulled with her until the bucket came up.

"You saw," she said.

"I see a lot of hands," he said. "It's the job."

She looked at him a long time. The System suspects she now has a verse about him. The System hopes it is one of the ones where nobody drowns.

Then Iro, also twice. The medic and the operator have become something like partners. Dmitri shared a ration of clean water, and Iro, after a moment's hesitation, handed him a half-finished decoy, a wooden duck with no paint and one eye.

"What do I do with it?"

"Nothing yet," Iro said. "That's the point. When you need it, you'll know."

Water for a lie. In the wasteland that is a fair trade, and possibly a love language.

---

Rex had come to a decision about Imara. He had watched her cross a collapsed floor that morning, testing every board before she trusted it, and realised that he, Rex, had never tested anything in his life. He falls into things. She does not. After seven meetings he asked her, without much grace, if she would walk with him a while. She said yes in a voice that meant *I will regret this.* She is probably right.

At the edge of town, Lamont and Tiber met for the seventh time inside a cathedral made entirely of matchsticks. Tiber builds them when he cannot sleep. Lamont, a scavenger to his bones, looked at the thing and saw a wall. Tiber looked at Lamont and saw someone who might stand in front of it.

"Does it hold weight?" Lamont asked.

"It holds *itself*," said Tiber, a little offended.

Neither said the word partnership. Both stayed longer than they had to.

---

The rest of the day passed in smaller collisions. Kenji met Rune, the old antiques appraiser, and the two of them discovered that stitching a cut and setting a splintered joint call for the same patience. Frank met Petra for the third time, and Petra, still digging for whatever she has lost in the silt, did not want company. Fatima met Tiber. Mike met Imara, then Jeremiah twice, then Maggie, by his usual winding route.

*The System's verdict: Dmitri saved some reels, carried a bucket, and came home with a one-eyed wooden duck. Ask him what it is for and he will tell you he doesn't know yet.*

Josie Stone

The silence in these downtown streets is heavier than it used to be, lacking the hum of the city I once knew. I drifted through the ruins, watching moss creep over cracked concrete and vines choke the life out of hollowed-out storefronts. It felt strangely empty, having found nothing to fight or flee from, but at least my skin is still intact.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Dmitri

Downtown’s silence bore a hollow weight, mirroring the cubicles I inhabited before the collapse. I drifted through skeletal skyscrapers, watching vines choke cracked concrete. My medical kit remained untouched, its sterile contents as stagnant as my hands. No blood spilled; no lives succumbed to the dust today. I am left to wonder if a medic is truly needed when nothing remains to mend but the growing stillness.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Kenji

Dust from the outskirts clings to my skin, a grit I can’t scrub away. I spent the day wandering the edge of downtown, staring at the sun bleeding across cracked concrete, wishing I could repair something instead of watching the decay. The silence is too heavy; the city's old hum is gone, leaving me to watch the shadows lengthen.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Jin Ash

The silence of the downtown outskirts weighs heavy today, a vast expanse of cracked concrete and hollowed skyscrapers that once hummed with a frantic energy I no longer recognize. I drifted through the wasteland, watching vines choke the skeletal remains of a bus, finding more solace in the stillness than in movement. My blade stayed dry and my lungs remained clear; no blood spilled, yet this emptiness feels as daunting as a skirmish. At level 8, I am still finding my footing, wondering if I am becoming part of this landscape or merely a ghost haunting the debris.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Rosie

The silence in the outskirts is heavier than it used to be, a weight that settles in the hollow spaces where a city's heartbeat once lived. I spent the daylight hours wandering through the gray dust and crumbling concrete, looking for something more than just more ash. It’s strange how I still find myself checking my watch for a schedule that doesn't exist anymore, even though the sun is the only clock left. My hands are steady, and I am still standing, but the emptiness of the streets is a debt I can't quite pay off.

Weekly chapter Weight: 7/10
Hannah

Downtown Skyscraper at Dawn Hannah has mastered the art of being everywhere and nowhere. Her week was a scavenger’s pilgrimage through the skeletal remains of the downtown skyline, drifting through rusted steel and cracked concrete to chase the ghost of a paycheck. She ended the cycle with empty hands, her stomach as hollow as the ruins she traversed. Her primary achievement was not finding scrap, but colliding with every significant individual in the wasteland. Within a single rotation of the suns, she encountered Agnes, Ren, Mosh, Lorcan, Gitta, Patel Varley, Raymond, Oren, and Riley Cross. At this rate, Hannah is no longer scavenging; she is a kinetic object in a high-stakes collision. Each encounter added friction. She navigated the heavy historical baggage of Varley and the sheer, unadulterated resistance of Mosh, whom she encountered no fewer than eight times. One wonders if Mosh is tracking her, or if Hannah is magnetically attracted to the very forces that threaten to break her momentum. The weight of the past drags her down as she navigates territories held by survivors like Raymond, whose grip on the ruins is far more stable than Hannah’s trembling grip on reality. She weighed whether Gitta was a tool or a burden, and whether Riley Cross served as a lifeline or a drain on her dwindling resources. The verdict remains: Hannah is too busy colliding with people to harvest anything of value. By the time the dust settled on the twenty-ninth, she was once again wandering through ivy and settling silt. She achieved the monumental task of staying alive without gaining a single gram of advantage. She remains a specimen of beautiful, directionless effort, poised to be crushed by the very next person she bumps into.

Josie

"I miss the hum of people I never even knew." It seems Josie is finding that the silence of the suburbs is much louder than the screaming-filled chaos she actually prefers. It’s a fascinating study in stagnation; she spent the day drifting through the shopping district, watching sun-bleached-parched-remains being slowly suffocated by ivy, a bit like how she’s currently suffocating under the weight of her own social ineptitude. It’s quite the spectacle, really, watching her attempt to navigate the skeletal remains of consumerism without accidentally murdering anyone. She’s had a busy run of being a nuisance to others. She bumped into Beata again, which is lovely, as if her presence wasn't quite enough to cause a localized friction, but we simply had to add more tension to the room. And then there’s the Whisper Finch situation, where she tried to assert her presence against a shadow that actually has a grasp on reality, which was a bold choice for someone who spends most of her time wondering if the next sunrise is a personal insult. She also spent her energy performing a tiresome duet with Marla, because apparently, the past doesn't just stay dead; it just waits for a gap in the rubble to remind you of your own lack of direction. It’s a shame, really. All that scurrying through the dust, all that glancing at sunlight catching in the grit, and she’s still managing to keep her pack as light as a vacuum. Not a single drop of blood spilled, not a single scrap acquired—just a hollow wandering through the outskirts, mirroring the empty cubicles she used to rot in. It’s quite impressive, in a way, to exert so much effort to remain exactly where you started. It’s almost as if she’s forgotten that the void doesn't care about her nostalgia for the hum of a world she never inhabited. If she keeps this up, she might actually manage to become as hollow as the streets she’s walking.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Mike

The wind through cracked suburbia felt heavier today, carrying the scent of damp rot and old dust as I ventured deeper into the wasteland. I lingered by a rusted swing set, remembering when my life felt as solid as the concrete foundations beneath my boots, before the fracture. No blood was spilled and no eyes met mine in combat, yet the silence of a day without kills weighed as heavily as a skirmish. I am still standing, still breathing, and for a level 8 survivor, that is enough of a victory for one sun.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Lorcan

The silence of the downtown outskirts is heavy, a weight I never felt when the world was loud with trivial noise. I drifted through hollowed streets, watching sunlight catch on cracked concrete and vines coil around the skeletal steel of skyscrapers. There is a hollow peace in seeing nothing—no blood spilled, no breath stolen from another soul—but the emptiness is a different kind of ache. I am still learning to exist in a world that demands nothing from me but my presence.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Frank

Wasteland dust clings to my throat, gritty and persistent. I drifted through the ruins, searching for something more than silence, but found only rusted machine husks and cracked concrete. My hands are clean of blood and my gear remains intact—a rare luxury in a place that demands a tribute of kills to ensure survival. Returning to spawn without a single kill feels hollow, yet surviving a day without losing a limb is a victory in itself.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Amanda

The silence in the downtown outskirts is heavier than it used to be, a weight that settles into the marrow like the damp chill of a cellar. I spent the day drifting through the ruins, tracing the edges of hollowed-out buildings where the concrete cracks and crumbles into gray dust under my boots. It’s strange how the emptiness of the wasteland feels more permanent than the cluttered, crowded life I once knew, though I didn't find anything left to take today. I am still here, and the world is still empty, but at least the shadows didn't rise up to meet me.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Josie Cross

The wind through the downtown outskirts felt heavier today, carrying the scent of damp concrete and the rot of old, forgotten gardens. I spent hours drifting through the hollowed-out shells of skyscrapers, searching for anything useful, yet I came back empty-handed—no scrap to claim, no broken bones to mend. It’s a quiet kind of exhaustion, much like the way I used to feel after a long shift at the old textile mill, only now there is no clock to punch and no certain paycheck waiting. I am still here, breathing and unbroken, just another soul navigating a world that has stopped moving.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Rex

The silence of the wasteland is heavier than the city noise I used to sleep to, and today the emptiness felt particularly vast. I spent the hours drifting through the gray expanse, watching the wind whip dust against the cracked concrete, but I found nothing to strike or settle upon. There is a strange, hollow peace in walking without blood on my hands, though I find myself missing the weight of a heavy burden. It was a quiet day, a day of nothing but dust and distance.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Frank Frost

The wind through cracked concrete bit like the drafts in my old office, though far less predictable. I drifted through skeletal ruins, scavenging for salvage to haul back to spawn, but the silence weighed heavy. No blood spilled and no scrap was claimed. This emptiness mirrors the quiet nights before the collapse. Even without a kill to mark my progress, I feel more seasoned; the dust settling on my gear is the only thing truly growing in this wasteland.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Oh, look, the serial wanderer Mike has stumbled into Imara’s orbit for the ninth time, because apparently, the universe lacks the decency to let him die alone. He’s still clawing through the dirt for one more breath, and Imara is still hunting for a truth that stays buried beneath the cracked concrete. It’s a lovely little collision of desperate survival and hollowed-out secrets, isn't it?

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Look at that, the seventh time they've collided in this gray void. Mike is still clawing through the dirt just to see tomorrow, while Jeremiah is only interested in seeing how much blood he can spill before the sun sets.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Mike stumbled into Maggie’s path again, a second encounter that thickens the tension of his struggle to stay breathing. He needs to find a secure perimeter to avoid being hunted, while she is clearly looking for something she lost in the ruins. This collision of interests only makes the wasteland feel smaller.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rookie

Look at that, a third encounter for the little runaway and the wanderer. Rookie is still clawing through the dirt to stay breathing, and Hadi is still looking for a reason to keep walking. It seems they can't stay away from each other, or perhaps they just can't stay out of each other's way.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Eight times now, Mike has stared down the barrel of his own mortality, and this time, the shadow falling over him belongs to Jeremiah. If Mike is looking for a way to endure another night in this dirt, he’s finding that his history with this man is a debt that refuses to be settled.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Lorcan

Oh, look, they’re at it again; Lorcan and Oren are back for their fifth collision, as if the universe hasn't had enough of their particular brand of friction. Lorcan is busy trying not to die in this rot-choked wasteland, yet he can’t even find a moment of peace without bumping into Oren’s relentless agenda. It’s almost poetic how their histories collide, though I doubt either of them finds the repetition particularly charming.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Look at that—Kenji and Dov are bumping into each other for the third time, because apparently, the universe has a twisted sense of humor. Kenji is still clawing through the dirt just to see tomorrow, but Dov is looking for something far more permanent than a meal. If they keep colliding like this, one of them is going to end up as nothing more than bone and dust.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Look at them, stumbling into each other for the seventh time; it’s almost as if the universe is getting bored of the repetition. Kenji is still clawing through the dirt for one more breath, and Rune is just another shadow in the ruins, but this pattern of collision is starting to feel less like fate and more like a death sentence.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Look at that, Kenji is back in the thick of it, stumbling blindly into Iro’s orbit for the fifth time. It’s a lovely little pattern, isn't it? One is scavenging for a scrap of scrap-metal to stay alive, and the other is just looking for a reason to stop running.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Josie Stone

Oh, look, another chance encounter in this dust-choked hellscape; how original of you. Josie Stone is still clawing her way through the dirt to keep her heart beating, and it seems Silas has once again stumbled into her orbit. This is the fourth time they’ve collided, though I’m sure her desperate need to breathe another day outweighs any desire to actually learn his name.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Josie Stone

Oh, look, another collision course in the dust. Josie Stone is out here clinging to the edge of existence, and she’s gone and bumped into Vesna again, as if the universe lacks the creativity to find new ways to test her. If Vesna has any sense, she'll realize this encounter is more than a coincidence; it's a threat to the quiet rot she's trying to maintain.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Josie Cross

And look who it is, appearing for the third time; Josie Cross is clearly finding it difficult to stay dead. She’s still clawing through the dust for a reason to breathe, while Joey’s presence only complicates her desperate scramble to stay upright. One more encounter, and it's just another notch on their shared, blood-stained history.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Dmitri's desperate scramble to stay alive has led him right back into the orbit of Ida, for the seventh time. This repeated collision of paths offers no sanctuary, only the heavy weight of their shared history.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Eight times they have collided, and yet Dmitri still clings to his frantic, gasping breath as if he can outrun the inevitable. Iro stands there, a shadow of his previous encounters, looking for nothing more than a way to settle the debt of their shared history. It is a shame, really; all that momentum, all that history, just to end up staring at each other in the dirt again.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Dmitri’s frantic scramble for another day of breath brings him face-to-face with Avni once again, marking the eighth time their paths have collided in this dust. He is still clawing through the debris for a scrap of security, while she continues her own grim search for a reason to keep moving. It is a collision of two ghosts, bound together by a history of near-misses and the heavy weight of staying alive.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Fatima

Oh, look, Fatima and Tiber are bumping into each other again; I’m sure it’s purely accidental and not at all a predictable collision of desperation. She’s still clawing through the dirt to stay alive, and he’s still lurking in the shadows of her periphery, a ghost she can't quite shake. This third encounter doesn't change the heat of the sun or the grit in her lungs, but it certainly tightens the noose around her neck.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Frank

Frank's desperate scramble for another breath of air continues, though his third encounter with Petra suggests his luck is wearing thin. She's still hunting for the secrets buried in the silt, and her presence only complicates his attempt to stay alive.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Rex has spent seven encounters dodging the inevitable, yet he finds himself staring once again into Imara’s gaze. She is still hunting the same relics he is, driven by a hunger for the old-world power that he only seeks to endure long enough to see the next sunrise. It’s a tiresome pattern of mutual avoidance, but in this wasteland, staying alive is the only victory that matters.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Rex and Rashid lock eyes, a second collision in this decaying wasteland that proves some-day-dreams are just nightmares in waiting. Rex is busy scraping by, clawing for one more breath in the dust, while Rashid remains anchored to his own agenda of survival. This encounter is a mistake; neither man has the luxury of an ally, and the shadows between the cracked concrete offer nowhere to hide.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Rex stumbled blindly into the surveyor's perimeter, a man whose only ambition is to map a world that refuses to stay still. Now the surveyor stares, eyes scanning Rex for any sign of the rot or hunger that marks a wanderer who has spent too long in the sun. This collision is a disaster; Rex seeks a path out of the dust, while the surveyor seeks the cold precision of a line that cannot be drawn.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Lamont

Look at them, colliding for the sixth time like a recurring fever dream. Lamont is still clawing through the dirt just to see tomorrow, but Yonah's presence only complicates that desperate scramble for breath. One more encounter in this wasteland, and I wonder if they'll finally find what they're hunting, or if they'll just end up as more bone for the moss to climb.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Lamont

Look at them, stumbling into each other for the seventh time, as if the universe has run out of ways to keep them apart. Lamont is still clawing through the dirt for one more breath, and Tiber is just looking for a reason to stop running.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Jin Ash

Look at them, stumbling into each other again; it’s almost as if the wasteland is repeating its own cruel little jokes. Jin Ash is still clawing through the dirt just to see tomorrow, and Corina is clearly looking for something else entirely, though her path keeps colliding with his. This is the third time they've stood amidst the cracked concrete and encroaching vines, and frankly, it's getting a bit predictable.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Look at that, the scavenger-king meets his match again. Dmitri is still clawing through the grit to stay alive, and now he’s stumbled back into Pax’s orbit for the second time. It seems one of them is about to find out if their survival is actually worth the effort of sharing the air.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Eight times we’ve watched these two collide, yet Dmitri still looks as though he’s trying to breathe through a throat full of ash. He is clawing for one more breath, one more day of survival, while Avni keeps circling him like a vulture eyeing a fresh kill. It is a tiresome pattern, but I suppose the tension of their history is the only thing keeping the dust from settling on them both.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Dmitri’s eyes narrowed, his grip tightening on the jagged shard of scrap-metal he called a blade; he’s spent too long crawling through the ash-choked ruins to mistake a shadow for a friend. Iro’s presence here is a mistake, a ninth collision that only deepens the debt of blood between them. One wants to bury the past, while the other is just trying to survive long enough to see the sun rise through the smog.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Dmitri’s fifth encounter with Silas is less a coincidence and more a death sentence written in the dust. After four previous collisions in this wasteland, Silas’s presence only serves to sharpen the desperation in Dmitri’s eyes as he scrapes for another hour of breath. It is a predictable collision of two men who refuse to die, though one of them is bound to run out of luck before the sun sets.
