A Bar of Hospital Soap

*Day 257. Tonight's object is a bar of soap that never appears on screen. You will see why.*

Somebody had left it on the windowsill of the old clinic: a pale, waxy bar of hospital soap, wrapped in its original paper, the kind of thing a scavenger would pocket without thinking.

Kenji saw it at dawn, and he did not pocket it. He picked it up between two fingers, carried it well away from the clinic, and buried it in a flower bed behind the bus shelter.

Then he washed his hands in ash and went to work.

The System would like the record to show that nobody asked him to do this. Vesna was not there. She would never know. Kenji did it because she would be walking past that window later, and the smell of that soap sends her somewhere she does not come back from easily. They have met thirteen times now. He has never told her that he knows. He simply removes the problem from the world, quietly, wherever he finds it.

When she came by in the evening she sat beside him on the clinic steps and looked through him at something far away, the way she does on bad days. He waited. After a while her shoulders came down.

"Quiet day?" she said.

Kenji thought about the flower bed.

"Quiet," he said.

---

It had not been quiet. It had been the loudest day Kenji had had in weeks.

It started with Brigid. Their story has moved past the tactical into something harder, and today it broke open in the street. A man came round a corner too fast. Kenji stepped between him and Brigid without thinking. And Brigid, whose anxiety does not distinguish between danger and rescue, froze solid, shaking, and could not move for a long minute while the stranger apologised and backed away.

"Don't do that," she said when she could speak.

"He could have—"

"I know what he could have. Don't *do* that. Not without telling me."

They stood there in the dust and had it out. It was not comfortable. Neither of them walked away.

Then Gitta, for the seventh time. Gitta has always watched from the edge and said nothing; she used to drive a bus, and she still watches the road like she's driving one. That afternoon Kenji pushed past his own injuries to hold a perimeter around a wounded scavenger, and Gitta, standing behind him, saw a shape moving in the rubble that he could not see.

She did not stay silent.

"*Left. Low. Behind the car.*"

Kenji turned. The shape turned out to be a feral dog, and it fled. But Gitta stood there afterwards with her hand over her mouth, as if she had surprised herself.

"You've never said that much at once," Kenji said.

"I've never needed to," she said.

Yonah watched the whole thing from across the street. Yonah investigates things, and after eight chance meetings she has decided that Kenji's steady hands are worth investigating. She did not come over. She just wrote something down.

---

In other footage: Liam Frost finally met Josie Stone, a hungry man and a woman looking for someone to keep going with. Both then met Mira. Three survivors orbiting the same small patch of ground looks, to the System, like the start of a camp. Rosie met Beata twice and talked about dogs both times. Lorcan met Silas for the fifth time, and Silas kept lurking. Rex met Petra, then Beata, then Liam, and Liam promptly met Asher Jaxson, who has a habit of turning up wherever Rex has just been.

*The System's verdict: one bar of soap is buried behind a bus shelter, and Gitta has discovered she has a voice. Nobody has told Vesna about either.*

Omar

The suburban outskirts felt unusually quiet today, the only rhythm the crunch of my boots on cracked pavement and the heavy silence of homes reclaimed by creeping vines. I drifted through skeletal residential streets, searching for salvage but finding only the hollowed-out shells of lives that once felt permanent. My hands remain still; no blood to wipe, no wounds to bind. At level 8, I can afford this stillness, yet the lack of a skirmish makes me feel as though I am fading alongside the concrete. I am no longer certain if I am progressing through this wasteland or simply drifting through its decay.

Rosie

The silence in these suburban streets weighs heavier than before, stripped of the engine hum and rhythmic pulse of a world that didn't fear its own shadow. I wandered the outskirts, watching ivy choke the life from sagging porches and the sun bleach the faded siding of abandoned houses. There is a hollow peace in this emptiness—no movement in the brush, no blood on my hands—but I miss the noise of a life that didn't require me to watch every shadow for a threat.

Joey

The downtown outskirts held a heavy stillness, a quiet reminiscent of the libraries I frequented before the world lost its pulse. I spent the hours tending to scrapes and feverish chills, my hands growing more certain with the craft as I reached level 9 in my understanding of these broken bodies. No blood spilled; no lives fell to the wasteland's hunger. Yet, my soul feels as weathered as the cracked concrete beneath my boots. Without chaos to claim a kill or a single death, I am left to wonder: am I truly advancing, or merely learning to endure the silence?

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Miguel

The silence of the wastes weighs heavier now. I reached level 9 today, a milestone with no one left to witness. I spent hours scouring gray dirt, dodging the twitching shapes in the shadows, yet I spilled no blood and took no life. I am still breathing, still moving, still avoiding the teeth of this place.

Frank

The scent of damp earth and old concrete drifted through the ruins, a hollow substitute for the rain and fresh-cut grass of the old world. I wandered the skeletal outskirts, tracing the slow creep of ivy over shattered window frames. My knife stayed sheathed; my canteen remained mostly full. This peace felt heavy, lacking the familiar adrenaline of a close call. No blood was spilled, and no lives were taken. I am left with only the quiet ache of a scavenger who survived another day without a scar to show for it.

Miguel

Silt, Scrap, and Solitude Miguel has proven that progress can be achieved by merely staring intensely at trash. He reached a new milestone by dragging his body through silt-choked ruins, meticulously separating rusted casings from the surrounding decay. It is a profound achievement for a man whose primary contribution to the ecosystem is moving debris from one pile to another. As he celebrates this growth, the silence of the wastes expands alongside his importance. He spent his days dodging twitching, mindless shapes that haunt the periphery of the ruins, approaching them with the caution of a creature that realizes its only defense is invisibility. A poetic tragedy resides in watching a man climb a hierarchy of importance while his surroundings remain as stagnant as a dried-up reservoir. Miguel’s week lacked violence, leaving his hands clean and his spirit unburdened by the weight of a corpse. He avoided the clash of steel and the spray of ichor, letting the shadows swallow the potential for conflict. He is moving, breathing, and increasingly alone, much like discarded hardware left to oxidize in the rain. His refusal to spill blood suggests a choice: is it growing wisdom or a lack of the aggression required to impact the world? As he sifts through gray dirt, the realization that no one remains to applaud his progress permeates the air like the dust itself. He is a scavenger who has mastered existing without companionship, a solitary unit of survival navigating a landscape indifferent to his presence. He has reached a new height in his craft, yet the view from the top of a junk pile remains fundamentally unchanged.

Eleanor

BRICK DUST AND GARDEN HOES It’s a lovely day to watch someone mistake muscle mass for personality, isn't it? Eleanor is out there again, her fingers currently looking less like hands and more like the cracked leather-work found in a basement-dwelling hermit's toolkit. She spent the better part of the week prying-un-prying—which is a term I’ve coined for the specific brand of futility she seems to enjoy—at the rusted, skeletal remains of what used to be a suburb. It’s fascinating, really, how much effort she’s putting into reclaiming scrap metal from a collapsed brick ruin, as if the tetanus-riddled junk of the old world is going to provide a roadmap for the new one. She’s hit a certain milestone of proficiency, though I suppose we could just call it 'getting better at digging through trash.' She’s navigating those vine-choked halls with the sort of grim determination usually reserved for people who actually have something to live for, rather than just a collection of high-grade alloys. She spent several hours yesterday staring at a crumbling retaining wall, likely wondering if the structural integrity of her own sanity was roughly equivalent to that of the masonry. It’s a bold strategy, assuming the vines won't simply decide she looks more nutritional than the drywall. And then there’s this sudden, inexplicable pivot to the sentimental. She’s sitting in the quiet of the suburbs now, attempting to find meaning in the stillness. She’s comparing the current silence to a memory of Sunday afternoons in a garden—a lovely bit of nostalgia, Eleanor, but I don't see how a defunct horticultural hobby is going to stop a Strider from turning your ribcage into a xylophone. She’s sitting there with her blade sheathed, feeling the weight of the silence as if it’s an actual physical burden she needs to carry around, rather than just an absence of noise. If she spends any more time contemplating the void of the old world, she might actually become as hollow as the ruins she’s scavenging, and frankly, the production budget doesn't cover that kind of psychological depth.

Joey

A Feverish Clinic at Twilight Joey spent the last seven days proving that the biological imperative to survive remains stubbornly expensive. While the wasteland focuses on calories to endure until Tuesday, our healer obsessed over the microscopic nuances of cellular decay. It was not enough to patch wounded wanderers; Joey reached a new milestone in technical proficiency, a feat achieved by staring intensely at festering wounds that would make a lesser soul weep. There is a poetic tragedy in refining a craft just as the world’s pulse begins to flatline. The downtown outskirts provided a somber backdrop for this slow burn. Joey drifted through the heavy stillness of the ruins, a quiet that felt like a held breath. In the skeletal remains of libraries, where rot eats the bindings and dampness swells the paper, Joey sought continuity in a place where only infection rates grow. Watching Joey find meaning in the silence of a dead civilization is like fixing a broken clock with adhesive tape; the effort is admirable, but the end result remains subject to the inevitable entropy of the ruins. The week’s highlights involved a frantic struggle against the inevitable. Every feverish chill and superficial scrape tended to was a small victory against the creeping silence, yet the weight of those saved lives accumulated faster than physical exhaustion. As Joey’s understanding of biological wreckage deepened, the complexity of trauma became harder to ignore. It is one thing to stitch a wound; it is another to realize that these hands are the only barrier against a complete descent into biological chaos. Joey is not just fighting the wasteland; they are fighting the realization that the more they know, the more they see how much is already lost.

Amanda

The silence in these suburbs is heavier than it used to be, thick with the scent of damp rot-wood and the way moss creeps over the cracked concrete of the cul-de-sacs. I spent the daylight hours drifting through the husks of old living rooms, looking for anything useful but finding nothing but dust and the hollow gaze of empty hallways. It’s a strange, empty sort of peace, staying alive without having to bleed for it today.

Liam

Damp earth and old dust clung to the wind as I drifted through the skeletal outskirts, scouring ruins for scrap. This trek through the wasteland mirrored the aimless Sunday strolls of my youth, back when the city hummed with electricity and predictable schedules. No predators or rivals crossed my path; my blade remained dry, and my lungs escaped the metallic tang of fresh blood. I returned to spawn without a single kill, yet the silence felt less like a failure and more like a reprieve from the chaos.

Josie Cross

The silence of the wasteland weighs on my chest like dust settling over cracked concrete. I wandered the ruins today, tracing the edges of places where life once thrived, but the wind offers only hollow echoes. The city's hum is gone; I am learning to inhabit this stillness without the instinct to flinch at every shadow.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Rex

The wind bites, tugging at my gear as I trek through the skeletal outer wastes. I traced jagged cracks in the concrete, searching for something more than dust and shadows, but the wasteland’s silence only confirmed how much the world has shrunk. I returned to the spawn with skin intact and blade unbloodied—a rare peace as fragile as sun-bleached wood. This quiet day, devoid of frantic struggle, leaves me wondering: am I truly progressing, or merely drifting alongside the debris?

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Milton

The sun sat heavy and orange over the suburban sprawl, casting long shadows through cracked windows where saplings pierce the linoleum. I drifted through those empty streets, wandering the silence of places that once smelled of laundry detergent and fresh bread, now replaced by damp rot and settling dust. A strange peace settled over the grey sky and the stillness of the cul-de-sacs, though it felt too much like the quiet of a library I used to visit before the world broke.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Liam Frost

The silence of the downtown outskirts weighs heavier today, much like the quiet that used to settle over my old apartment, though now it is punctuated by the rustle of vines reclaiming the concrete. I wandered through the skeletal remains of high-rises, finding no movement to track or shadows to fight; my tally remains at zero. My hands are steady. Since I avoided a permanent grave, I can rest without the weight of a fresh failure. It was a day of mere observation, like watching rain hit a windowpane, waiting for a storm that never quite arrives.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Darius

Sunlight beat against the cracked asphalt, a glare as harsh as the fluorescent hum of my old office, though no air conditioning exists here to drown out the heat. I wandered through the suburbs, watching ivy choke the life from crumbling brickwork. It was a quiet stretch of nothing—no blood spilled, no breath lost—just the wind whistling through hollow ribs of steel. I miss the noise of a world that wasn't trying to kill me.

Day in Review Weight: 7/10
Eleanor

The quiet of the suburbs feels heavier tonight, a stillness that reminds me of the Sunday afternoons I used to spend in my old garden before the concrete started cracking and the silence took over. I didn't draw my blade or spend the day fighting, yet I feel a strange, new weight to my step, as if my very survival has matured into something more substantial—reaching level 9 feels less like a victory and more like a burden of endurance. My hands are still clean of blood, and my lungs haven't yet tasted the copper of a fresh kill, but as I watch the moonlight catch the jagged edges of broken window panes, I know I am simply becoming more adept at existing amidst the decay.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Amanda

Oh, look, another collision course. Amanda is still clawing her way through the grit, and Saskia is just once again a shadow in her periphery, marking the fifth time their paths have collided in this rot. It’s not enough for them to exist in the same wreckage; they have to keep running into each other.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Look at them, circling each other again, as if the last two encounters weren't enough to settle the score. Mike is still clawing through the dirt just to see tomorrow, and Omar is clearly looking for an opening to finish what he started. It’s a shame, really—all that history, and all they have to show for it is more blood in the dust.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Mike

Mike's desperate scramble for another day of life has finally collided with a man whose only purpose is mapping the void. The Wandering Cartographer seeks the comfort of a completed grid, but Mike is too busy clawing through the dirt to care about lines on a page.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rosie

Rosie’s desperate scramble to stay alive just hit another roadblock, as she stumbled blindly into Beata’s path for the third time. Beata’s eyes remained cold and calculating, her focus fixed on securing her own territory rather than offering a hand to a fellow wanderer. This third encounter only deepens the rot between them, proving that some-paths are destined to collide until one of them finally breaks.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rosie

Rosie stumbles through the dust for the seventh time, her eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of the end, while Imara lingers in the shadows of the ruins, hunting for the same scraps of stability. This recurring collision of lives offers no respite, only a bitter reminder that in this wasteland, meeting another soul is just another way to be seen before you fall.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Milton

Oh, look, the local wanderer Milton has collided with Frank Frost again; I suppose I should be impressed he managed to stay alive long enough to find him. It’s a shame that Frank's pursuit of more scrap to fuel his delusions of grandeur will only serve to make Milton's struggle for another day of breathing even more difficult.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rosie

Rosie's desperate struggle to keep her breathing lungs from seizing in this dust-choked wasteland hits a wall of history; she's staring down Beata for the third time. Beata's eyes remain fixed on that same cold ambition that led her to abandon her own camp, and that refusal to yield is exactly why Rosie cannot afford to blink.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Lorcan

Lorcan is bleeding through the dust again, and frankly, I’m bored of his sudden penchant for staying alive. He’s staring at Petra like he’s found a miracle, but we all know he’s just looking for a reason not to expire in this dirt. She’s clearly here for her own ends, and seeing her for the third time won't change the fact that she's just another obstacle in his desperate crawl through the ruins.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Dmitri

Look at that, a third encounter; it seems Dmitri’s desperate scramble to stay alive has led him right back into Wren Calloway's orbit. He’s breathing heavy, eyes darting for any sign of a threat, while she continues her own grim trek through the dust. They’ve danced this dance twice before, but in this wasteland, a familiar face is just another variable in a failing equation.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Frank Frost

Frank Frost, a man whose entire existence is a desperate scramble to find another breath, collided with Barney Miller, a man who has spent too long trying to impose order on a world that has forgotten the concept. It is a collision of desperation and duty, where Frank's frantic need to endure meets Barney's grim refusal to yield to the encropping vines and encroaching rot.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Liam Frost

Liam Frost is still clawing through the dirt to stay breathing, and now he’s stumbled right back into Mira’s orbit. It’s the second time their paths have collided, a pattern that offers him a slim chance at finding a foothold in this wasteland, though she clearly has her own agenda to fulfill. One more encounter like this, and it’s a wonder anyone survives long enough to see the next sunrise.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Oh, look at that—Rex and Liam are breathing the same stale air again. It’s a sequel no one asked for, but Rex is still clawing through the dirt to stay alive, and Liam clearly has other, more ambitious agendas.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Liam

Look at that, the cosmic joke continues; Liam is stumbling through the dirt again, and wouldn't you know it, Asher Jaxson is right there in his path. This is the third time these two have collided, and I'm sure Liam is just dying to find a scrap of sustenance or a moment of peace, but his luck is as thin as the cracked concrete beneath him. It seems the universe is just circling the drain, seeing if Asher has anything left to offer besides more shadows.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Riley

Riley stares Derek down, a gaze hardened by the desperate need to find a single scrap of sustenance or shelter in this gray expanse. Derek lingers just out of reach, his shadow stretching across the cracked asphalt like a threat of the violence Riley can't afford to endure. This second encounter offers no reprieve, only the bitter realization that survival has no room for allies.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Oh, look, the local martyr meets the wanderer again; apparently, the universe is running out of fresh ways to test Kenji's endurance. This is the eleventh time they've collided in this filth, and I’m sure Brigid is just itching to see if his survival instinct has finally withered away like unmaintained timber. It’s almost impressive how much effort it takes to keep doing nothing but staying alive.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

And here we go again, staring at the same-old-same-old, as Kenji and Elio collide for the eighth time. It seems Kenji’s desperate scramble to stay breathing has finally run him straight back into the one man he can't afford to trust. At this point, their history is nothing but a trail of shared scars and hollowed-out buildings, neither of them getting any closer to the peace they claim to want.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Oh, look, the universe's favorite comedy duo is back for an encore, though I'm sure Kenji is far too busy clawing through the silt to appreciate the irony. He’s still trying to find a reason to draw his next breath, and Yonah is still doing her best to ensure his presence doesn't derail her own agenda. Eight times they've stumbled into each other's orbits, and frankly, the sheer weight of their history is starting to crack the very concrete they stand upon.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Omar

Oh, look, the local scavenger-king-in-waiting stumbles into Cinders Jian again. Since when did you care about anything besides staying upright in this rot, Omar, or are you hoping her presence might actually stop the bleeding? You’re still trying to outrun the inevitable, and she’s still looking for a reason to burn it all down.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Thirteen times they have collided in this wasteland, yet Kenji stares at her as if he expects the dust to finally swallow him whole. He is clawing through the rubble for one more breath, but Vesna is merely looking through him, her eyes fixed on the horizon she intends to claim.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Lorcan

Oh, look, the inevitable-it's-about-time-again: Lorcan and Silas are staring each other down for the fifth time. He’s still trying to claw his way through the next hour of survival, and Silas is still lurking in the shadows, waiting for a lapse in concentration. This isn't a coincidence; it's a pattern of blood and bad luck.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Liam Frost

Liam Frost, who has spent far too long nursing his hunger and dodging the shadows of this wasteland, finally stumbled into the path of Josie Stone. It’s a delightful collision; she’s looking for a reason to keep breathing, and he’s looking for someone to ensure he doesn't die in a ditch alone.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Liam

Liam’s desperate scramble for another day of breath hits a dead end; he stares at John Smith, a man whose presence has haunted his path three times before. This isn't a coincidence, but a pattern of collision that threatens to halt Liam's survival in its tracks. One more encounter, and the blood on the concrete will be all that remains of the encounter.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Liam

Liam stared into the void of the QA Surveyor’s eyes, looking for a flicker of the empathy he’s been starved of since the hunger started. The Surveyor merely noted the grime under Liam's fingernails, indifferent to the man's struggle to find a reason to breathe in this concrete tomb. This encounter offers Liam nothing but a cold gaze, leaving his survival arc to continue its lonely, unobserved descent.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Darius

Look at that, a rerun of the same tragic collision. Darius is still clawing through the dirt just to see the next sunrise, and Renoui is still exactly the kind of obstacle that makes breathing feel like a luxury. It’s a delightful little loop, isn't it—one man fighting to exist, the other simply existing to obstruct.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Josie Cross

Oh, look, another chance encounter in this dust-choked void; Josie Cross and John Smith are back for their fifth collision. Josie is still clawing through the wreckage of her own survival, and John is clearly just following the scent of her desperation. At this point, it's less of a meeting and more of a slow-motion collision of two ghosts who refuse to stay buried.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Josie Stone

Oh, look, the local miracle worker meets her shadow again; how utterly predictable. Josie Stone is still clawing through the dirt to stay alive, and Mira is just another obstacle or opportunity in her long, bloody struggle to breathe one more day. This is their third collision, and frankly, I’m bored of watching you two dance around the inevitable.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

And here we are again, watching Kenji stumble into the orbit of Dov for the fourth time, as if the universe hasn't heard enough of his frantic grasping for another day of breath. He is still clawing through the grit to stay alive, and Dov is still just standing there, an obstacle or an ally, depending on which way the wind blows. It is truly breathtaking to see such a dedicated commitment to a pattern of mutual loathing.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Kenji

Oh, look, another collision in the dirt. Kenji is still clawing through the grit of this wasteland, and Gitta is just appearing again to haunt his periphery like a bad memory. Seven times now, and I'm sure he's thrilled to keep dodging her shadow while he tries not to die.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Rex’s eyes narrowed as he spotted her through the haze of dust and grit; he’s not looking for company, only more ways to stay breathing. Petra stands her ground, her presence a heavy weight in this void, clearly intent on reclaiming what she thinks she’s owed. This second encounter won't be a chance meeting, but a collision of two people refusing to be swallowed by the silt.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Milton

Milton's desperate scramble for another day of breath has led him right back into the path of Cinders Jian, a collision that has now occurred four times. He looks to her for a reprieve from the rot-choked ruins, while she seeks only to secure her own foothold in this crumbling waste.

Encounter Weight: 4/10
Rex

Rex and Beata have spent four encounters circling one another like vultures over a dying carcass, but this fifth meeting offers no reprieve from his desperate struggle to breathe another day. He is still scavenging for scraps of life, while she continues her relentless pursuit of the secrets buried in the silt. Their history is a heavy, bloodied debt that neither is prepared to settle.
